Another favourite that lasted until the car left the forecourt was putting gear oil in the engine so that those cars with oil pressure guages registered good pressure. This is going back before even my time, however, and maybe before the sale of goods act...
I did hear of a great fix once, where a Citroen 2CV's gearbox ran completely dry after an oil leak in the Atacama desert, and, not having oil, they packed it full of mashed bananas. Apparently ran fine for 500 miles until they got to a big city to fix it (true).
