There is no real logic, rhyme or reason when it comes to boundary wall ownership. Most of the time, one of the landowners will be responsible for maintenance, but sometimes it can be shared.

I've just had a similar issue arise on a job I'm on, apparently even the courts struggle to offer a definitive answer, and if you get the deeds to the house, you'll find that the red line boundary scales to over a metre wide! Though if a fence is clearly on your property, it's your fence. This gets sticky if its been there +12 years as it could be argued that the boundary line has now changed.

Ultimately, if the student side aren't bothered and you want a fence..........

So, anyone want to talk about the Cricket then? ;)

Good luck, whatever, Donald.

Well at least on the side where I think the fence is mine there is actually a low level wall coming off my house and down the garden for about 15ft and the fence is running off that, so I would assume something from that but who knows now. The neighbours on that side aren't too bad and the fence as far as I can tell is fine, unlike the other side.

May be too late  This street is so cliquey I'm sure they have a right goss about me gardening in my pjs. Dunno what to make of it but they're all Labour party people and the woman opposite me is on the county council. Maybe I can ask her wagwan with the fences.

When entering or departing your property, you could perhaps facepalm over the appropriate facial side, thus averting your attention from the panels of fence.

Contact the landlord and tell him one of the students fell through it at their last party.
Landlord will likely replace it and charge the students.

If the students say anything to you, tell them you had agreed with the landlord to pay for half of the fence. Deny saying anything about a party.
Students will assume their landlord is trying to stitch them up for a replacement fence.

What exactly does the neighbor on the other side want to do with the fence?

I don't actually know, they just said they were thinking of doing some work on it. It was only a passing comment in another convo but unless it's just painting or something it's going to involve traipsing around my garden, and the only way you can get to it is through the house since I live on a terraced street.

Tell them that they can do whatever they like, on the condition that access is via a trampoline, with a crash mat on the other side.

As said, the posts should be located entirely on the owners side and the "ugly" side of the fence panel should face into the owner's garden too (Although a lot of people don't know that or push their luck and pretend they don't, so it's not always something to go by).

If the students next door have used your plant or something to support the fence though, that defintely gives you reason to get them or the landlord to do something about it. You could just tell them you were considering getting a dog, so you need the fenceline to be structurally sound.
