Oil warning light - help

Hey folks,

More probs with my Mk4... The oil pressure light is taking longer and longer to go off

It started on Fri when the oil light came on at a visit to the services after a long run (2 1/2 hours) but went out after a hundred yards and over the weekend it's been taking longer to go off.

Seems like when starting the engine it takes a while for the oil pressure to build, or the sensor to switch the light off - it's now on constantly but as I need to get to work etc. I've no choice but to drive on.

I'm hoping that it might be the sensor - if it's the oil pump them that would be the last straw and it'll be off to the breakers yard for the ol' gal.

Can some good folk confirm the location of the sensor on a 2.2 VTEC Mk4 (above or below the filter) and is it easy to replace - thanks.

Anyone else had a oil warning light do this? If so, what was the problem (and cure)?

It might sound silly but have you checked your oil level? the oil light coming on is normally sign you have not got enough oil in the car and that the engine as just about to sieze.

After the recent cambelt failure, PAW replaced the oil & filter and the first thing I checked on Fri was the level, which has not changed since I got the car back from PAW & there's no leaks underneath.

got a multimeter? check the switch (can it be checked with a multimeter?) it might not be anything to do with oil level it might be pressure do you get any blue smoke on start up?

Hi, there's no blue smoke on start-up and the oil level has remained the same after 500-odd miles since the cambelt etc. was replaced.

It's directly below the oil filter.

I had it at the start of the year in the silver lude. Turned out to be pump failure for me. Testing the switch is definitely the first thing to test though.

Can I ask what oil you've been using?

I cant be bothered to try and find the correct page in all the 4G supplement pages, but if you go to page 8-10 in the 5th gen service manual it tells you how to test the oil pressure switch.

Can I ask what oil you've been using?

Thanks for the location - guess it's not that easy to get at?

PAW used a Total oil but I can't remember if it's semi or fully synthetic...

No, you'll need to get at it from under the car, so ideally you want it up on a ramp as it's a pain in the ass if you're lying on your back.

Do you know what weight oil was used? 10w40, 5w40?

Why don't you ring PAW and ask and explain your problem. I am assured they do not bit unless you look like a cake!
