Starter motor just clicks

Post by Gayno » Thu Nov 14, 2013 10:32 am

Go to start the car and "click" from the starter solenoid but nothing more.

Well, this was the second time, the first time the engine turned briefly (dead battery so I'm jump starting), then next attempt and it just clicks.

Starter dead?

Already did.

Also tried rocking the car with it in gear in case the spur gear is stuck against the flywheel.

You could try connecting it to the battery directly. Use a jump lead or something. Connect one end to the positive and just dab the other end of the lead on the starter connection to see if that spurs it into life. You'll know whether it's the starter or something ignition related then. Obviously you'll need a reliable battery source.

Just removed starter motor. Using jump cables the motor spins freely.

Put back into place, all connected up, same problem just get a click and that's it.

Going to try push starting it in a bit when my dad has a break from work.

Annoying thing about this is it's parked in front of the garage, and I need to do some work on my dads car, and the Prelude being in the way is stopping me from doing it. So far on my day off, I've achieved nothing, and currently only have 4 hours of daylight left :(

So when you tested it out of the car did the solenoid kick it out?

Battery might be knackered.

Umm, no, I only took the motor part off. When applying battery power the motor then spun freely.
