Alloy wheel chemical stripping or shot blasting - anybody??

Right, I need to finish refurbishment roces on my alloy wheel, split rims.
Barels and centres will be paited and lips polished, and I've found dificult to do centres. Try to remove a paint using a Nitro paint remover but that is not strong enought to remove everything so I need some stronger thing to do that. Any body can remoned any other stuff to remove old paint - maybe acid.., or any shop where they doing a cheical stripping??

About shot blasting - I know I can do this but - I do not want to do this because after shot blasting surface is not smooth - and I have a dentre nuts to secure a centra cap and I would like to do mirror polish on that so after shot blasting that will pain to get a mirror shine

Will be gratful for any advice

nitro morse the bits you want polished and shot blast the bits to paint

The new Nitromors is rubbish. Nothing like the old stuff. It will remove felt pen fine. But anything thicker and you will struggle.

Shot blasting can be sanded back to a smooth finish easily. But you need alot of time.

Anything stronger than that green Nitro?? Like Ratty said, nitro is crap, I've ussed this but do not remove a paint very well, removed a top coat but primer is still there, even after a few coat od nitro paint is still there.

so they have health and safetyfied nitro morse have they ?
i did my wheels with it last year and they had josephs coat of many colours on them but it took it all off with a brush on, soak overnight ,and re apply and scrub next day.

Try using Wickes own brand paint remover. I used that to strip my valve cover. Admittedly OEM valve cover paint comes off pretty easy, but this stuff was fast! My girlfriend also "started" to remove +5 layers of really old paint from our stairway (each layer being really thick gloss) It was sticky work, but again the Wickes paint remover broke it down in an instant. If only she finished the bloody job now!

Like others i used nitromores to strip my wheels and a karcher to blast it off. Then very fine grade sand paper and a lot of elbow grease. Bear in mind for every minute you spend sanding it will need at least 10 minutes polishing. I eventually ran out of steam and gave them to professional to finish. He showed me a set of BMW alpina alloys that had been shotblasted and he said they were ruined and that no amount of polishing would remove the surface pitting. So like tramroad motors said ok to shotblast if your painting but if your going to polish them then there are no shortcuts and nitromorse and a lot of work will be required.

I've recently used a soda blaster to clean stuff off. It's far gentler than shot. He did some really thin sheet steel for me, it removed the paint and corrosion but did not effect the substrate at all.

you may aswell blow talcolm powder through your mrs hairdryer at it .

no only joking ive heard of this and heard good results but i be tits

expensive cause you cant re use the powder.
