Radiator expansion tank has been bypassed?

alrite folks

looking around under the bonnet I noticed the pipe off the top of the rad to the expansion tank has been replaced by one that just feeds to the ground? (by a previous owner)

why would they have done this? can i just reconnect the expansion tank back up?

Yes, definitely! That's ridiculous, especially that the expansion tank is still there

I reckon it was some rudimentary way to bleed air if they didnt know about the nipple by the t-stat...either way it was forgotten about and left tucked down behind the rad
