Radiator mounting.

Post by ek9sid » Mon Jan 19, 2015 5:51 pm

Hi guys...quick one.

When removing the radiator to take the engine and gearbox out, I managed to shear off all 4 bolts. I'm kinda stuck now as I have no idea what to do, whether to try and drill them out and use new bolts, cable tie the radiator back in place or any other way of bodging.

Ideally, I don't want to bodge, but similarly, don't want to get a new slam panel, or whatever it's called.

Any advice would be gratefully received ;)

don't know think they are welded to the slam panel I suppose you could drill them out and re tap them?

Yeah, that's probably the best bet. Hopefully got some taps in the right size at work.

Thanks for your help Merc

A previous owner of my 5th gen tried drilling out two snapped bolts and ended up slotting one of them, so it's now essentially a through hole so I use a nut and bolt instead. They're the same style Honda bolts, just longer so you'd never know. So that's an option.

Otherwise the nuts are welded, so it's either redrill properly and retap or remove the nut and reweld new ones, which I'd say is the last choice.

Think I'm just going to drill through the remains of the bolts and then tap those holes (giggity).

If the nuts on the other side decide to come off then I'll have to see about the nut and bolt combination.

Thanks again for your input :)

I had broken bolts on the slam panel, I carefully drilled through with a 4mm bit, most of the bolt came out, and the rest could be tapped out as there is not much metal left.

These 10mm bolts are so brital
Best thing is to do
any bolts that come out in 1 piece grease the thread then put back care full not to over tight
Replace the very rust knackered heads

The ones that have broke
If it has a small bit sticking out
wd40 and try to wind out with gripers turning left to right tryng to make the thread as u taking it out as they rusty
Or if u got a handy welder get him to spot them
They go warm and he wind them out with gripers
