Keeping car off road? Help.

Post by nitin_s1 » Thu Apr 12, 2012 5:12 pm

My insurance runs out tomorrow (Midnight today) and I'm planning on not driving it so it's off road.

I have still like 4 months road tax left and like 1 years of MOT (lol MOT, I don't think MOT is relevant here).

So what do I need to do? Tell the DVLA that the car is sorn and that's it?

drokking sooo confusing. Just want my car in my private car park and leave it there for couple of month.

Send your tax back and declare it sorn'd (If you can do that, I've only ever sorn'd a car when the tax has run out)

SORN it. It is an offence to have a car with tax but without insurance. So contact DVLA and arrange for it to be SORN'd wef tomorrow.

Off the road actually means off the Public Highway, so be wary where you are keeping it, as the definition of a public highway is quite broad.

Yep, read this page for details on how to reclaim your remaining tax and declare SORN:

MOT makes no difference so don't worry about that.

Provided where it is parked is not public highway then you'll be fine.

You can SORN you car online, you can also claim your 4 months of tax back my printing off a form and sending it off - they will then send you a check for your 4 months tax refund.

Links to SORN your car and print off a tax refund form can be found in the 'vehicle checks and tax' section on listmymotor.com here:

You can also get the form from the post office, not sure if you get your money back from them or send it and have to wait for a cheque or whatever.

I think there is a form where you can you can combine tax refund and SORN in one (I think I've done it before), but otherwise just do it individually as suggested already.

yep, they send a cheque. Remember you can only claim back full months, so don't expect anything for April.
