I've never used any sealant and never had any leaks, but then it depends on how decent the rubber seal is I guess. The previous seal on the daily had some added sealant around it and it was leaking still. The white valve cover I then put on had a very good conditioned rubber seal so I removed all the old sealant and didn't use any new.... And all is good so far.

With regards to nut order. I generally start on one of the corners, then go diagonally opposite and keep going as diagonally opposite as possible including the central ones as well obviously. BUT I only do them all up hand tight to start with (So use a 10mm on an extension) before I go in with the ratchet. And even then I go all round only just tweeking them up gradually, before tighting them tight. (So I go around at least 4 times from start to finish). Make sure you don't over tighten them though... They can snap.

Nuts should be torqued to 12nm in 3 stages. I feckin wrote where they all were and the post got bumped

no 2 is the top middle then clockwise they are: 4 7 3 5 8 6 with no 1 in the middle of the cover between spark plugs 2 & 3.
