Cambelt .. what else

Post by grant_day » Wed May 02, 2012 1:10 pm

I'm pretty sure I need to get the Cambelt replaced, but what else should I get replaced at the same time?
It's not a job I really fancy doing myself but, if there is a link to a how to for it, I will have a go.
Otherwise how much should I expect to pay a garage to do it?
Cheers all, apologies if its been asked and answered before.

I think the usuals are tensioner belt, and the waterpump if it hasn't been done in a long time?

Give Rich at PAW a shout for a price. He's very competitive and you know it's been done by the best then ;-)

Dunno if this has been mentioned before but a tip for doing cambelts.

Put a dot of tippex on a tooth of each camshaft pulley, and mark the same tooth on the cambelt. Do the same for the balancer pulleys and the bottom crank cambelt pulley. Then lay your new cambelt side-on to the old one and copy the dots across. Then you can't really go wrong putting it on - just line up the dots :)

another i heard was cut half the belt off along its length, slide the new belt half on where the removed half was cut the rest of the belt on then slide the belt on the rest of the way!

i'm in no way saying this is right and is completely uselsss if you plan on changing the water pump and tensioner ;)

Hi I did mine last weekend, I replaced the cambelt & balance belt with tensioners (full kit),
new balance shaft seal & retainer,
Water pump
Camshaft seals,
Crankshaft seal,
Hydraulic adjuster (although alot of people change to a manual tensioner).

It took me about 7 hours as it was my first time and I just took my time.
The crank pulley bolt can be a very tight and you need the tool to lock it up or use a 3/4" drive gun if you have access to one. :D
I found a few how to guides online but primarily used an auto data book, but ideally you need a helms manual.
If you do end up doing it yourself don't put too much tension on the balance belt (like I did) or it'll sound like you've installed a supercharger.
If your not confident then I'd recommend paying someone to do it, as its not something you want to get wrong. But sayig that if you have the tools and time then its fairly straightforward.
This is a good link (hope i'm not breaking any rules :? )

Hope this helps. 8-)
