So had a great time at Japfest, brilliant day as it always is. Just a shame it didn't end that way...
Upon leaving the circuit and clearing the traffic, once we'd left the village and into the national speed limit zone it was time for some "freaking insane" driving. After a couple of minutes I heard a clatter underneath the car, but put it down to a stone being kicked up by a front wheel.
Then there was a grinding noise appearing, and getting worse, especially when I pressed lightly on the brakes, so knew I had to pull over and check it out ASAP. Luckily I knew there was a pub about a mile up the road so I gently drove there not going over 40 in the 60mph zone.
As I pulled up to the pub, I had to use the brakes a little more and at the entrance the whole front wheel locked up and I couldn't move. I got out to look, but nothing obvious, so waved the line of cars behind through. I tried again to move and with a fair bit of clutch whatever was jammed broke free and I could move into the car park off the road. It jammes again as I was pulling into the space, but again managed to break it free and park up.
Having a look at the front passenger wheel, we noticed there was a big gouge around the inside, and then we noticed the caliper was touching the inside of the rim. Due to having no tools, had to feel by hand around the wheel, and I could feel that the top carrier bolt was missing, allowing the caliper to rotate forward and make contact with the rim.
I had to get the car recovered, as there was obviously no way it could be driven like this. The AA were called at 7:15pm, and a local recovery company finally turned up at 9:45pm. Just a good job we were at the pub!
Obligatory truck shot:
So............here's how the caliper should look:
...and here's what it actually looks like today:
You can see where the caliper has made contact:
...and the state of the inside of the wheel:
So that is my end to Japfest, not the one I hoped for, but oh well these things happen.
One final note, is that I do not believe I am liable for this event, due to the MOT garage replacing the CV gaiter on that side just over a month ago, so they will be getting a call in the morning to see what they have to say about it.
I'm just thankful that this happened when it did, as 10 mins later and I would've been doing 70mph down the M4, and this happening at that point doesn't even bare thinking about.
I have to add a MASSIVE thanks to Duo for helping me out and staying with me until I got it home, without him, I'd still be stuck at the pub
