Which engine cleaners/flush/additives to use?

Post by lewd lude lover » Thu Jun 07, 2012 5:11 pm

Hey guys, Your experience and opinion would be very much appreciated.

So I have this issue with the engine on the lude. It smokes. On overrun, but not all the time, and when I pull off there is a nice little plume maybe 60% of the time and if I hold the throttle open to 5k (close to static rev limiter) there is obvious oil burning going on in the combustion chamber from what comes out the exhaust. The engine pulls well and has no other issues.

I bought the car (shadowcats old lude) over 18 months ago but its not been used since the top of the engine was rebuilt. It was smoking a bit when I bought it. The engine originally had a cracked valve and carbon build up. This was the reason for the rebuild. Nothing was done to the bottom end.

Advice leads me to believe that one or more piston rings are probably gummed up with carbon. The time the car was sat would have allowed these deposits to harden and now cause the issue's I am having. A good thrash and cobweb blowing should normally sort this out but I'm still smoking  and believe me I'v tried.

So far I have removed the sparkplugs and inspected the piston heads (as much as you can)
The two each side had what I would liken to 'thick window grime'. Quite even across the face of the piston, looking like a good wipe with a cloth would take it off...

The center two show a much thicker adherance of dirt but in a patchy/flaked/chipped pattern. Much like a dirty roasting dish.. this looks to be a lot harder and in need of a scrub but the clean areas are really quite clean.

I have already removed the plugs, put 20ml of neat Redex in each cylinder, soaked overnight and given it a thrash but this did not help the issue. I also had none of the billowing smoke out the exhaust I was told to expect after this treatment.

So....I have a quote to rebuild the bottom end which is a little more than I fancy right now so I'm going to throw in a few products and see which, if any :? 'work'

These are the final list:

wynn's combustion chamber cleaner

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wynns-Product ... 19c97e27a8

This seems to be specific to the chamber and intake. I cant see that bit but it cant hurt.

Marvel Mystery oil

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Marvel-Myster ... 19d1a95e27
This seems to be a little bit of a snake oil maybe but I'm willing to see......

Amsoil Crankcase cleaner.

http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/cra ... flush.html

Or the wynn's alternative?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WYNNS-ENGINE- ... 231e050903

I have chosen these from internet research and recommendation.
Now I know the pro's and cons of engine flushes but what have I got to loose?

My question is, Have you used any of these and had good/bad results? Have you been told of a better alternative?

Im going to liberally throw cleaners at it until it finally gets a dose of 'stop smoke' :o but them's the breaks eh? So what else/otherwise could I do?

Any comments appreciated.

I'v used the forte flush before I think. My S.dad swears by it. Ill bang in the fortifier with a fresh change after the flush.

I plan to do all the chamber treatments etc, pop a flush in with the current oil, drop that, replace with fresh, go for a good hard spank and then drop the oil again, change the filter and fill it up again. see what happens...

Try a thicker oil: 10-40 or 15-50.

sweet mate. cheers.

@judderod: that will also be on my list. I am running 0w40 mobil fullysynth at the moment. I realise this will be a cause if the bottom end has a little play down the sides.

I used to use Castrol magnatec but Im not so sure of that one now :?
