Hmmm a bit smokey?...

Post by NafemanNathan » Thu Oct 18, 2012 8:58 pm

So the other week I pulled up the lude and the oil light flickered on and straight off again. As soon as I got home and the car had cooled I checked the oil level and it was just below the minimum level. Instantly I assumed I had a leak as I'd changed the oil only 6 months ago and I've never had a Prelude use oil the fast before.

Anyway I had some more 5W40 turn up yesterday and got around to topping her up this evening. She then started up just as she always does and the engine sounded sweet as a nut as it always does, but now she's sounding a little more muffled than usual at the back end... Almost as if the baffles in the exhaust are going.

There's also a noticable amount of white smoke/steam coming out the exhaust as well :? She's been stood a week or so now, and what with all the rain we've had there's a chance there's a lot of moisture in the system which would explain why it would be steam, but does this look like steam or smoke to you?...

Or...

For about a week before the oil light flicker she had been smoking/steaming first thing in the mornings on my way to work, but again I just assumed it was moisture.

The head gaskets on H22 are generally quite good aren't they, but could this be a possibility or is the a more likely story? When I thought I just had an oil leak I suspected the cam oil seal or maybe even the vtec solenoid gasket, and there looked to be damp oil just about the gearbox, so I've cleaned that off to then keep an eye on it. But I'm just worried now what with having a head gasket go on my old Rallye, or am I just thinking the worst?

 The video's a good visual actually, it does go away pretty quick (like it evaporates ;-) ), so from that I'd say it's steam, but the initial expell looks really thick.

Afraid the Rallye went nearly a year ago lol. I got more for it knackered, by selling it with th standard exhaust and no wheels (sold them and the performance exhaust seperately) then when I'd sold it the dy before it broke!

I'll drive it to work tomorrow (only 12 miles) and see how it goes.

Cheers guys. I feel a bit better now

yeah nothing to worry about imo just condensation build up - mind u id check the exhaust for any leaks as they would draw in damp air to the exhaust on start up. the other thing ive noticed with my lude is not to touch the accelerator pedal when starting it-seems to settle down quicker.

Oh yeah I never accelerate on start up... Unless it's struggling to turn over.

looks like steam to me too, smoke fumes hang around longer than the vid portrays.

one thing to try to see if your head gasket is going is go to your mot garage and ask him if he could use his smoke analyzer to sniff the header tank steam for co2 fumes just dont dip the probe into the tank as it will suck up the antifreeze and water like a mcd's milkshake
