just wondering why nobody seems to use the electric column from the corsa b/c on a prelude after removing the power steering.
apart from the weight saving and extra bhp from removing the pump i understand its for better feel but surely it must be a right bugger for slow driving requiring arms like garth.
benefits with the electric column is it can be either taken off a wheel sensor for less assistance as your speed increases or on a resistor switch to get whatever feel you want as im sure you already know. so why doesnt anybody use them ?
i've fitted a few of them to escorts for rallying and it works well.
Thanks for your comments mate, yeah you are right of course...motorsport IS the only sport 8-)

With regards to the power steering, I can't answer for others but for myself I love the feeling of the steering with PAS removed. I love the weight/feel of it, the feedback it gives you and of course the weight savings over running the OEM system.
Yes the steering is a little heavy at very low speed (ie parking) but all you have to do is drive like everyone used to before every car on the planet had power steering. As long as you are moving at least a little bit then steering is not too heavy IMHO.....running some Neg camber helps as well of course.

The reason why nobody uses an electric PAS like the Corsa, Pug or MR2 system on a Prelude? Again I can't answer that but I guess most people are either happy with the straightforward removal or just don't want the hassle/expense of fitting an electric system.

I also have used several different electric systems on some of the project cars I've built over the years, the Corsa column solution is a pretty decent one and is reletively easily packaged but obviously if someone wanted it done to a standard road going car then it's not quite so simple.

One of the cars I've used electric PAS systems on

just to reinforce what richy says, the weighting of the steering once the assistance has been removed is divine! it is hard work on the road and takes it out of you after a few hours but that would be my only negative observation. i'd recommend it for track work, i drove through London in mine and it wasn't the most pleasant experience!

Yeah, although nothing used to have it, once it started appearing on everything, PS started allowing designers to build cars that kind of needed it. Few things, and certainly nothing new, are suited to removal because the design makes the steering completely unsuitable for a non power option :(

The MR2 electric system, is that not ridiculously noisy? I remember looking at it a while ago and Ammo found a video of it running on a 5th gen, crazily loud.

But I believe the system is more than just the pump and the power supply, there's also some time of control unit that can vary the assistance? I think the guy just had it set up so it was always 100% assistance.

What a great build thread, and well done taking all that time to port it across from PUK too.

Yeah I read that ;) But is the variable resistance something that he's bodged in (in the professional sense of the word ) or is it all part of the control unit?

Oh! I took it from that that the "variable resistance and off" is part of the OEM MR2 system.
