Sorry, I remembered it wrong, but not sure how after it took me so long to find the problem

The temp sender was the cure for my non-restarting issue...

But it was the FITV that was causing my surging.

Have you ever swapped over the alternator? My bouncing idle stopped when I changed my alternator, It could have been coincidence however BMCC said this about it.
BMCC wrote:The idle control system uses a signal from the alternator to know when it is charging (so it can raise rpms to compensate for the extra drag). If you changed the alternator and this stopped the bouncy idle then it looks like a faulty alternator signal was the cause of your bouncy idle.

However after simply putting in another alternator the problems seems to be cured :? :D

I noticed the lack of bounching when I drove it in town this lunchtime, my drive to work in the morning doesnt have any stops so I didnt notice it. I have no idea how its sorted itself but I guess its a result :D Even though it doesnt settle straight away.

With my VTEC hesitation gone and the bouching stopped im only left with a knock sensor CEL to deal with

I had swapped the temp sensor as well when trying to find my surging issue, but it didn't do anything. Certainly worth trying though.

Also, be careful with the sender... They like to shear. Probably best not to bother swapping that one.

quick update, today i swapped the main relay for a spare, dizzy and coolant temp sensor - all made no difference.

tomorrow i will borrow a multi-meter to test the output of the alternator to check that's up to scratch at 14v.

i have made a vid of the hunting and rough idle so will post that up 2moz

My alternator always kicked out the correct voltage.

ok ill still see if I can change it. my hunting seems more extreme than yours in your vid, my idle starts at 3k now  and then hunts within the first minute, before even warmed up. I made a vid of it yesterday but not had a chance to upload it yet, will do that tonight.

I may go down the blank the fiav route as a test as well, even though I know its not this.

No point in blanking the FITV if holding yout thumb over the throttle body hole during idle doesn't do anything. You'll only cause yourself hassle during cold start up as well then.
