i used a similar sized screw and nut in place of the pin when i did my rear caliper

A nut and bolt wouldn't be ideal in that scenario tbh - the bolt will be a bit soft and bendy, plus the bearing face is threaded rather than a smooth shank, so it'll tend to wear and go sloppy
It would get you out of trouble as a quick fix, but I'd suggest getting hold of the right pin for longevity

I hate those things, probably not too bad if you clean them and coat in grease regularly but after 10-20 years of road salt...
First one I did came off after an hour of molegrips, jugs of boiling water and detergent (absence of a good blow torch) and then blasting with Locktite's new freeze spray; eventually managed to squeeze one out.

Tried the same for my second one for 30 mins, then nearly an hour of battering with a hammer and molegrips but no such luck. Actually pretty glad it resisted as it gave me my first blast with the angle grinder, which is great fun! Wanted more stuff to destroy after that!
