Shell points are one of the lowest value of all the "loyalty cards" out there!farlow wrote:That's some epic data collection. Not sure if I've misinterpreted the figures here but the the v-power fuel saver card or whatever it's called doesn't seem to save you anything. Well it does but £20 a year, really...

Yeah, the Shell V-Power club card discounts don't add up to much. They only started issuing vouchers towards the end of 2007 but still the payout is tiny in comparsion. However, a small discount is better than no discount.
Give me some dates and I'll check my receipts.Donald wrote:
Some anomalies appeared in the data (missed recording?) where it calculated 200+ mpg in some places, <10 in others. One I can recall is where you put a fiver in, drove 1 mile, then put in 50 quids worth - I know why you'd do that, but it threw the very basic formula I used off kilter. Anyway I omitted the extremes (basically anything >±12 mpg from your average) and it hasn't affected the overall trend.

I can explain that anomaly. On 09/11/2007 was the first and only time my car had ran out of petrol. So £5.49 worth of 95 RON petrol from the local Total petrol station was put in a can (drastic measures). After pouring it into my car's tank, I drove to the nearest Shell garage (1 mile away) and tanked up.Donald wrote: Some anomalies appeared in the data (missed recording?) where it calculated 200+ mpg in some places, <10 in others. Another slightly odd one is me putting in only £5.00 worth of fuel on 27/11/2008 before driving 8 miles to fully fill up (51.49 litres). I vaguely remember this, from memory the fuel nozzle was playing up, repeatedly clicking off, so I got fed up, gave up at £5.00 worth, paid then drove to my usual petrol station and filled up properly.
Other fill ups which you may consider an anomaly are maybe when I've filled up then a week or so later, I've had to embark of a long distance journey so have filled up once again in preparation, even though I had only used a small amount of petrol up until then.
Let me know if there's any dates which puzzle you, but I'm fairly confident that there are no actual mistakes in the figures.

@CARRisma I'm fairly confident too, someone who keeps records for 10 years doesn't tend to record them incorrectly
what you said makes perfect sense now.
As you say it's just being thrown out by the short journey followed by a long one, so where it's throwing out a low mpg it's normally flanked by a super high one. As said it's only a very basic formula. You could probably smooth the graph out by using fortnightly averages or something, the one above is taking into account every data entry.

I don't think making a chart in Excel qualifies me as a geekwurlycorner wrote:Donald, there is absolutely no disputing it now.
There have been times when I thought I was possibly in the running, but I must admit defeat that I am clearly outclassed in this department...

I have used Road Trip app on my iPhone to write down eveytime I fill up and I've been doing this since 2012.
Since 21 May 2012 till 28 May 2015 (that's the day it was my last fill up and then went on my drive way), I have driven a total of 11,027 miles, used 1,922 litres of Super Unleaded (or Shell V power) and spent around £2,582.50. This gave me an average of around 26.08 mpg.
