Its a 2.0 litre and does use a small bit of oil, but sure if its valve seals or piston rings its nearly gonna cost the same as a new engine anyway, i have got the compression test kit but the weathers been crap and i work 6 days a week at the moment so hav not had a decent day to do it (my car parked outside) i would be nervous about driving without MOT on the car i think the cops here can seize the car cant they?
i would not know where the Lambda sensor or the EGR thing even is to check if there in decent condition

Didn't realise the mot had actually run out, yep don't drive it without an mot
Paying someone to do the valve stem seals would be cheaper than buying a new engine and paying someone to fit it. (If that's what it is.)
Do a compression test to see what it shows before you condemn the engine. EGR valve is on the inlet manifold, lambda sensor is on the exhaust downpipe, just behind the block in front of the cat.
Have a look in the service manual to find out all about them.

yea the guy said he was gonna 'sort it' when i rang him and booked it and told him i was thinkin it might fail on emissions (the guy is a friend of a friend)RattyMcClelland wrote:Mine failed on emissions but then suddenly passed once we realised we plugged the tester into the lude and not the ford focus next to it.

i tried doin compression test but the kit i hav is poo and i hav to take a part of it into work and get a tiny piece grinding off
i was about to take of EGR valve and attack the front Lambda sensor when my neighbour came out ( he always seeing me under my bonnet messin about ) and told him what i wasa about to do and he said its not worth cleanin EGR valve he done it before and didnt make a difference he said i would be aswell off replace it,
When i had my spark plugs out they were coated in a grey crust i only changed them about 4000 miles ago, Ther NGK Iridium i think ther meant to be platinums or atleast thats wat it said in manual on here i think, im not sure how much of a difference that would make, i think standard copper is better but burns out quicker where as platinum lasts alot longer but weaker spark? i went for middle option

Does your neighbour think he's a Honda expert? I suggest he clearly isn't...
Cleaning the egr does make a difference. There is no need to replace it unless the diaphragm has gone or the valve is burnt out/irretrievably jammed. The most common problem with egr valves is that they get coked up and that can be sorted just by cleaning them.
Pic of the coating on the plugs would help?
If you're thinking of taking the lambda sensor off, be aware that it's bound to round off/shear. They get completely seized in, so don't tackle it lightly.

This really helps shifting an O2 sensor.

But some manage ok with a spanner. I managed to remove one with some decent leverage in the old fashioned way:

Get it soaked in WD40 (or other) for a day or two before you go for it.
As for your neighbour, tell him politely from us...'B0ll0cks!'
A quick example how most are looking in this part of there lives:

Really stops the valve working after a point. Some carb cleaner and a little scrape with a screwdriver or something and they come back to life!
I'm determined to help you out, so you don't go and fit another engine!
Cheers,
Rob
