A chap who worked for dpd at a depot near us started his round in good faith but then had to take the van back because it was unroadworthy. The brakes pulled to one side and two tyres were illegal. He accepted that he should have noticed the tyres before, but would not use the vehicle with dodgy brakes.

He was fired.
well should i say the guy who works for dpd here is really good

He should have reported them to the HSE. They would have prosecuted in the crown court for breaching H&S@Work Act. Every employee has the right to refuse the work if the work is unsafe. An unroadworthy vehicle provided by the employer is work place equipment.

"Natural Monopolies" should usually be publicly owned. And don't get me started on selling off almost irreplaceably expensive infrastructures built by generations of taxpayers for the profit and ideology of a few wankers.

By 'few wankers' I'm guessing you mean Thatcher and her cronies, and all those since. How we allowed all the essential strategic utilities to be sold off is beyond me. And to be asked to buy shares in companies we already owned, was a complete rip -off.

I think the problem is that the populace doesn't really stand up for itself. Drag the politicians out into the street next time they act in the interests of themselves and their fellow elite rather than the general public, imo

Correct.
But didn't want the fuss and he certainly didn't want to keep that particular job.
He was working via an agency. Guess how much sympathy he got there, too ...

No reply from Yodel today, by phone or e-mail. Just checked on-line and apparently it's been delivered!

Interesting considering no-one is in...
