or a third gen surf.... that looks decent.

I went to look at the blue one in weymouth. i was heading down that way so worth the look.

was a great chassis but with a pool of oil under it after three weeks stood and a leaky gearbox I was not bothered about buying a vehicle and then putting it into a garage for what could/would have been over a grand of work...

reality is i should sell some vehicles and get myself a decent budget.. 3.5-5k and get something with some real legs in it.

Something like this I like that.

Ah ok, that's fair enough. I will add that my best mates dad had a surf. And it was horrific on fuel. We also have a hilux picup D4D Auto in with a faulty gearbox. So I would buy a manual Toyota if you can. I like that one tho, looks 8-)

re surfs I would only be looking after '98 for the intercooled engine which gives a more realistic return, apparently  I am hoping that your mates dad had a pre '98?  :?

The auto box is almost a given now. The missis will be towing the horses about and she is a woman after all... also with livestock you expect to perform to championship standards at the other end I think drivetrain shunt every gear change will effect her international placement  :? I really really hate autos. I want a manual.

Surely you can gently slip the clutch to change gear? yeah but then you have to concentrate on every gear change....

I know, I know

Bloody autos.

I will get my revenge though. When we get the field I plan to get a V6 vitara with mot fail and nos it. rent a mini digger for three days and make myself a half acre playground    drokk you horses. I have gas in the tank and a nose filter, come get some!!

I don't particularly like autos, but I don't feel the automatic transmission is of any detriment to the driving experience of the 3.1 Bighorn. In fact it means that I never have to take my arm off the armrest of my captain's chair 8-)

The only time it can be frustrating is when you want to overtake, although you still can if you plan ahead. Also, whilst the transmission is cold it won't select fourth gear or engage overdrive, which if you're like me and your commute puts you into a main road almost immediately then you can have a frustrating couple of minutes whilst everything warms up  60 in third on a cold engine is mechanical sadism.

Bloke down the road from me had one of those. drokked me right off, cause he wouldn't leave it in the (designated parking bays) in the road and insisted on parking on his drive, onto which it didn't fit, meaning it stuck out onto the pavement

@jj yeah I didnt dislike the bighorn experience  it was nice enough. I think I should entrust my missis and her hoof babies to something a little younger if I'm honest. It was a cracking car but like all cars that age it was showing its teeth and i think this next purchase needs to be a little more modern thinking :( If I can find one that minty maybe but for not much more money really (well, double but its still under 5k so its all the same eh?) you can get something with a center diff, locking difs and much smoother auto boxes etc. If I do move up north its the greenlaning capital of the nation so I would prolly want to give them a stretch  having been in one that was well maintained I liked it but I want a newer beadt for this next chapter. Something post '98 in a toyota is looking favorite right now but I need to go test a few and see what floats.

The info has been invaluable so far. The newer trooper is defo on the cards if its had all its work done and the older one if it was a minter but I want to see one in the flesh.

I feel autos are never in the gear I want but i suppose they choose the best gear to give the best torque, not the best compromise on the situation.

@wurly    you big girls blouse. I bet he wouldn't have mounted the central res though... :P :D

I had a 96 prado 3.0 auto short wheel base which is possibly the best vehicle i have ever owned. 22 to the gallon if you tickled it or booted it on a run or around town it never altered. Would buy another in the blink of an eye.

Cheers ted thats invaluable :D

It seems post '98 they got a big tech update and the engine is 30% more efficient so I will hope to be seeing 28 maybe? I have pretty much decided that its going to be the most money we can spend rather than the miminum so I am starting to look at the one owner, under 100k, FSH bracket. 3.5k and up.

At the moment the rason the surf is on the cards is it has selectable 4x4 where as the colorado has fulltime 4x4. I would think the surf would cost less in fuel and tires thanks to this?????

Like 2wd for normal daily and then switch to 4wd when towing? The toyotas have center dif over the isuzus so you can $WD on tarmac without stressing the gearbox. A big bonus when towing up hill I would imagine...

Just to endorse jj's comments on the Lotus. My mum followed a manual Lotus edition with an auto Citation. The former definitely rolled less and felt better controlled, but it wasn't night & day, and I'd tend to view it as a nice to have rather than essential, especially when it's bought for a purpose and not your only car.
