@ratty: No maybe more that in the area you are living in there are a multitude of different shades to choose from and that being non-white is the norm. Then I could imagine the rules being relaxed for the sake of expediency.
I think Cumberwhatsit would have been strung up by his curlies if he had said brown
even though thats the correct descriptive.
Poor bugger. news seems to have found another poor shmuck to hassle today.

It's all (or rather it should be) context IMO.
Half of my family is varying degrees of 'non white' and I know that most of those rels would find this as silly too. Classic case of missing the point
Cucumberpatch is probably of a similar age/generation to me - Close relatives of mine would say coloured, say 20 years ago, but that would be in normal conversation, even with some of said non-white family. It was never meant as detrimental, in fact, I think back then many even thought of it as the polite term. And I think that is down to the word sounding 'softer' than black. Does that make sense?
Hell, when I was at school, many of my non-white mates would refer to each other as 'Paks' (NOT Paki) etc, as it was an abbreviation, and I assume in their circles it was acceptable because of context.
It's a bit like that other example of that N word isn't it!! WE can say that, but YOU can't! /familyguy...
Think about it - Brit isn't considered racist, or Scot, Yank, or countless other similar examples, usually because of context.

Pak is exactly what I was saying re a word getting bad rap for being used. I mean its a country called Pakistan. It would make sense the people from that area would be of a 'tribe'. Rather like I am a Britonian of the tribe Eng. I am english.
But with a nasty tone every word becomes an insult
I suppose it just depends who is saying it.
Stupid racism

Exactly.
You'd like to think it's fairly obvious when you're aiming to insult, and Cuminherpatch clearly wasn't, quite the opposite in fact.
OK so if the term, for whatever reason, is now deemed socially unacceptable then fine, but he is human, allow him to make a 'mistake' given the context, and give generations and language chance to evolve, rather than miss the humanity of what he was actually saying.
The irony of humanity - so many humans lack it.
And common sense. That sure isn't common.

Yep, I was horrified to see whitening treatments advertised on tv/all over the place in the Philippines.Donald wrote:There is a huge potential market both stateside and in the Asian countries for topical creams that reduce melanocytes, and the research is in progress IIRC.
It was really quite embarrassing how they treated us as superior.
Especially when my main observations in the country were how the western world has drokked around with that country so much in the past that they have lost all their own identity and where that assumption that 'western in better' is massively taken advantage of and abused by western corporations today, newly peddling stuff that they have known for decades to be absolutely toxic and long since replaced by cleaner/safer/better alternatives
