Staying with stock for the moment. Decent pups work seem to work out around £40 or so each, so defeats the idea of this being a budget build (already spent a fortune on paint! lol!).

If he like the guitar, the neck, feel/action etc then there is always the possibility of upgrading the pups in the future.

I'm like a gorilla when it comes to soldering though. In my ignorance is unsoldered the wires from the pups rather than the switch when i took it apart. Made a bit of a hash resoldering so i may have to buy some more Squier pups anyway.

I've assembled the body (no neck or strings yet, still got to finish the neck) and plugged it into an amp and it buzzes/hums like fook. I've replaced the bridge and control plate with a black set, but they are painted, so these might be causing earthing issues. I also had to rewire the ground between the volume & tone pot as it was two short for the holes in the new control plate. I'm convinced at is an earthing problem (it hums regardless of where the pup selector switch is) and if i tap the pups they do make a noise though the amp.

So i need to change back the bridge and control plate to the original to eliminate the new painted one, check the jack is soldered the right way round and then check all the earths. I'm jobby at electronics, not done any since i left school nearly 30 years ago :?

I was thinking about changing from a 3 way switch to a 4 way with a parallel connection, but the wiring scares me too much!

Just a little update on this if anyone is interested. Finished the guitar a few weeks back, had to go back to the chrome bridge and control plate as they form part of the earth and as the black ones were painted they didn't earth.

Anyway, made a little hardbook scrap book to go with it which i did with one of these online companies and it arrived today. I must say, i'm impressed with myself, makes a nice little keepsake hopefully.

Couple of sample pages...

Cracking work, nice one 8-)
Just finished rebuilding (another) mates guitar myself, I'm not sure if I'm a glutton for punishment or if I actually get my jollies from it!
