Yep, in a similar way, it's a bit odd, but Auschwitz is somewhere I know I need to go.Sailor wrote:Not far from Weimar is Buchenwald. We weren't sure if we wanted to visit or just felt we should.
I was taken to a holocaust memorial when I was a child. I can't remember now whether it was in Austria or Germany, but the place itself has stayed with me ever since - very vivid - whereas I remember very little about the rest of the holiday.
I actually think that's a very good thing.

Yes.
Some places are gruesome and some places go beyond that. Asking the questions "why" or "how can we make sure that ..." becomes futile unless there's
a) a workable answer and
b) a collective will to make that answer work
Anyhoo:-
Day 17 (part 1)
Eisensach
A place that has much more resonance in world history than Buchenwald is the Wartburg. Not only is this where many of the central European knights started their journeys on the Crusades, it's also pivotal in the Reformation. Luther woz here.

This is a fabulous thread, well done @Sailor and thanks for sharing your trip. Like Iain mentioned, Auschwitz is a place I need to visit. A good friend of mine did a 'Grand Tour' earlier in the year covering quite a lot of Eastern Europe and he actually went there. His descriptions of the place were disturbing, moving and (strangely) fascinating to hear. The way he described, with the aid of some very bleak photos, the isolation and terrible 'peace' of the place have stayed in my mind ever since.
Thanks again Sailor, marvellous stuff.

i think i may have phrased that wrong i wasnt implying you would enjoy going. Its just there are places all around the world where great sadness crushes the atmosphere of the area and forgive me for being cynical we as a race have not learned any lessons
I hate that these places are touted as tourist attractions when they (all) should be a part of passing a test for being part of the Human race.
Anyway back to the great pictures

Don't know if it's still part of the national curriculum as it was when I woz at skool, but it should be... (although of course, the national curriculum is becoming less national, now that parents that know better and don't want little Johnny to learn about those nasty things are able to set up their own school and choose their own curriculum...

~10 years ago it wasn't in the compulsory curriculum. We did the industrial revolution, crop rotation (and no I wasn't in Norfolk at this time so it was nothing yokelwurlycorner wrote:Don't know if it's still part of the national curriculum as it was when I woz at skool, but it should be...

I think I recall it being part of the history GCSE though, pretty sure my school covered medicine of the last 300 years and WW2. I didn't do history at GCSE though.
Might have changed but largely the school stuff is bum droppings.
A lot of schools run trips to Dachau, too.
