On a serious note though, I was supposed to be getting married in about 4 months time, and I called everything off because the girl was demanding, and spending all my money as well, and I was a mechanic and a bar back, so not great pay. I got fed up of it, and I had people tell me to get out, and I'm glad I listened to them. In all honesty, talking from my experience, I would say tell him before it truly is too late!!!

it is an old law that has never been revoked and is well outdated but it is up to the individual judge how he/she reads the letter of the law.
as you said when it comes to large things as in the house they tend to look at who put in the initial investment at what date, eg you and your friend, and then your ex only got half from the date she could prove she took on the risk.
so in this case if he could prove she had never paid a morgage payment and her name was on the morgage, she would be in default on her half of the agreement and would not be intitled to her share of profit (but if the bank account was in joint names that the payments come from then proving she never put money in would be impossible)

There is no such thing as common law wife determined in legal terms.
Common law in itself is not explicitly written (defined) law, it's only law that is demonstrated by precedents having been set in County/High Court in that past (and hence become common practise)

There are enough cases where it's gone the other way (this may be recent) that it's easy enough to demonstrate she's not entitled to 50%, as there are the other way. It's just down to the lawyer being good enough/experienced enough at the time (as with all these things, and with NO suggestion meant about competence of your mates daughter...)

Here's some of my ex's and why I dumped them.

- Cheated on me
- Spending my money and tried to get me to sell the Mustang so she had money
- Spending some of my money, and told me off for spending the rest of my money on my lude
- Spending my money
- Spending my money and tried to persuade me to sell the audio out the Kangoo so she could spend it
- Spending my money, and wanted the insurance pay out cheque from the Kangoo spent on her

Then again, on the flip side, I have dated 2 insanely rich girls, and I never spent any of their money, and I would be fine to go out to Maccy D's or Chequers for food
