Failed MOT - help !

Post by quarkhimself » Wed Jan 14, 2015 6:56 pm

got the car back from MOT today, and it failed (can't say im surprised !).

i was expecting a fail on emissions, but surprisingly i only got an advisory. most of the things should be fairly easy/cheap to fix, but i'm worried about the nearside rear upper wishbone ball joint, and the corrosion on number 9 on the list.

I already have some of the parts (downpipe,02 sensor, rear brake pads,cv gaiters) and i hope you guys could help me find the bushes for the anti-roll bar and the ball joint.

i haven't had a look at the rust myself,so i'm wondering how bad it really is and if it's worth to fix or should i consider something more drastic...

the guy at the MOT showed me some quotes i wasn't happy at all with, but that place is usually expensive (they quoted me on 150+ quid for changing some headlight light bulbs and a cv gaiter on my nissan micra!(obvsioulsy i went elsewhere and got it sorted for half the price)
so what are your thoughts on this ? can someone recommend a place where i can get the parts i need ?
any help would me very appreciated

Langdon4x4 on ebay does the upper ball joints and ARB drop links for a tenner each. You'll have to hammer the ball joint into the arm to fit, but it's not too bad of a job.

I'm thinking on getting all the parts and then find a mechanic that wouldn't charge too much to fit them on the car.the mot certificate is still a bit confusing to me, "nearside, offside "?is that left / right? Which is which?

yep item 9 is the one you need to look at and get another opinion on
all the other items you can get aftermarket parts fairly cheap off ebay
honda would charge about £40+ for each of the cv boots - you may be better just getting a second hand driveshaft with boots

getting the handbrake up to spec might mean just servicing the rear calipers and resetting the handbrake mechanism

I think you will need to have you lude off the road for a week or two to get everything fixed :|

Thanks for the quick reply guys. I'll get the mechanic to have a look at the car tomorrow and hopefully the rust isn't terminal. I'll order the parts ASAP,it would be great if i could find a set of jdm one piece headlights to fit at the same time.

thanks for all your help, guys.i live in marchwood by the way, it would be great to meet forum members that live in the southampton area ! anyway i was browsing langdon4x4's ebay page looking for the parts and i started wondering if is there any difference to right/left ball joints or are they all the same ? the same question applies for the anti-roll bar bush.

is this the part i need ?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251012008280? ... EBIDX%3AIT

i'm also a bit confused about the anti roll bar bushes, on the MOT certificate it doesn't say if it's upper or lower right or left... should i get a complete set ? can you guys point me in the right direction please ? my car is a 4th gen JDM si lsd 4ws

Ball joints and ARB bushes/links etc are the same each side. It's only front track rod ends and complete suspension arms that are 'handed'.
