Boring topic about printers

Post by Donald » Thu Jan 15, 2015 7:05 pm

I need/would like a new printer. My current one is utter Clubbing Eddy and stresses me out.

Must be able to print both sides (simultaneously, for you funny ones).

Recommendations?

Simultaneously, or will duplex suffice?

Inkjets are cheaper to buy, but cost more per page, and if you only print every so often then printheads will dry up.

Lasers are more expensive purchase, but less cost per page and can sit for months without printing and still give you razor sharp image.

Sorry, I think I meant duplex (seen that term mentioned) but didn't realise it was different to simultaneous. So what is the difference? Or are you on a wind up? ;) After two-sided because I hate to waste the back of a sheet.

Is duplex the one that spits it out then takes it back in another way? ( )

I'll probably be going for best value rather than straight inkjet vs laser as it's just for printing powerpoints in handout format, e.g. 3, 6, 9 slides per page. Quality printing would be nice though as I will need to be printing detailed diagrams, so is inkjet typically better quality? Or is there not much in it? This will only be for personal notes so no need to be super duper quality.

I guess I'd not like to spend much more than £75 odd quid. Cost per page, how much are we talking? I don't know if that's difficult to quantify in a general sense.

I have an inkjet now. It has, as you say, dried up because I didn't really use it at all last year. drokking nightmare.

Also needs to be WiFi whatever. Although I imagine they are all like that now?

Not arsed about it having a scanner.

(I see what you did there ;) ) yes, duplex spits it half out then takes it back into the printer, or it has an internal mechanism that does the same and just spits out the finished print.

Cheapest wifi colour laser on ebuyer is £120 so a bit out of your budget, and a replacement toner pack of genuine cartridges is more than the printer!!

Yeah seems so.

So I'm looking at inkjet then, @Gayno.

Any particular manufacturer to avoid/go for?

They're all much of a muchness these days.

Best I can advise is find a printer within your budget then look at online reviews from those who have actually bought it.

I have an Epson inkjet printer, the cartridges cost less than 50p each. 8-)

My model does not do duplex, but given its performance I'd try and find a suitable Eposn.

I have that canon inkjet jobber I mentioned to you recently. WiFi, colour, duplex, scanner, fax and all that schenanigans for well within your budget. It's ridiculous:
