Funny how costs spiral.. Tyres...

Post by lewd lude lover » Fri Mar 06, 2015 8:32 am

So bought a new truck. Top of the budget. skint.

Realise that for safety it could do with a couple of new tyres on the back. (mismatched and one is cracked)

que lots of research into SUV 4x4 tyres :o total minefield...

2x = 250£ fitted. :roll: 65/35 onroad/offroad bias Michelin latitude cross. Great

Have another really good look at the fronts.

Realise the wear markers are different on 4x4 wheels  :? and that I could really do with another pair on the front as they are the original japanese tyres that could have easily been on there from factory (for best safety towing livestock that is...)

Ok, so 4. 4 tyres. ouch.

Then look at the alloys in detail. damn it but they could do with a powdercoat to take them through the next few years. A spray over wont last and a polish will take forever.

£50 a corner :(

Oh, Fudge. The SPARE WHEEL hanging from the back!  to properly rotate them and get best wear on SUV's apparently you need that as well!! (makes sense)

So thats 5 wheels to powdercoat and 5 brand new tyres to buy from an original two tyres

£875 for new shoes.

Suck it up james. This is gonna hurt, alot!
Still, I shouldn't need to worry about it again for 60,000 miles as thats the expected life of the tyres.

Think I'll be calling the folks with cap in hand     How does this happen?

Is it worth getting the wheels refurbed, for something that's going to be a workhorse?

But yeah, costs like that are a good reason for not running 4x4's

I have exactly the same problem when it comes to getting my CX's back on the road...

:?
(I have 5 of those cars, so that would be 20 tyres! :scaredtoss: )
Fortunately mine are all quite some way off from worrying about tyres though

 of everyone I kinda knew you might feel this pain. Your garage could ruin a man  20 tyres all at once. I would like to see you pass that by the missis :o

but for the bimmer where the seller just put a new set on for sale I always seem to repalce one or two but all of them? ouch.

The wheels refurb is a six/half a dozen. I read alot of people have issue with leaking ally rims on the 4x4 styles when they change tyres and it always comes down to aly worm. If all the tyres are coming off it would make sense to get them really well sealed while I have the chance. This just means it compounds the cost at one time but having to get them all taken off after 3 months because they wont hold air and getting them done then will really annoy me. Also the car is not on the road at the moment so I can have it on blocks for the week it'll take and I still have a vehicle (not sold anything yet)

Work horse....yeah... honestly no  If I wanted one of those I'da got a 2005 ex MOD ford ranger with 50k on the clock :? I bought it because I wanted a nice import again 8-) the germans are good at building cars but they dont have the quirk I like.
Its a workhorse to the missis, its my new import toy as far as I'm concerned

Well, nicely got round the missus with the toy then

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean about alloys letting the side down (literally! ;) ) One of them on my UKDM does that, one on Lisa's does it and pretty much ALL of the CX alloys do it! (The wheels on the C5, Xantia, BB4 and both BA4's seem to behave fortunately)
As you say, if they have a habit of doing that, then worth doing.
It becomes a right drag continually having to top tyres up, even with an electric pump

yeah after much research it seems like the best idea. That doesn't mean its finacially viable though :?

Like I say though, barring ripping the side open I shouldn't have to do it again for 60K+

I'm pretty sure the ones on the front are the OEM from factory. Its not been used hardly so def only the second ones from new. The rear are another story. One bridgestone thats new. new so it still has the red dot on it :x but has cracks in one place where its been sat with low pressure and one yoko from japan that could also be just the second tyre since factory.

And yeah I got it through fine. She appreciates that all the vehicles getting sold to afford the 4x4 and a horse box are mine  :?

I'm not sure I would get near 900 notes worth of tyres through without it being obvious from a safety and towing point of view though :scaredtoss:

That's easy enough to fix - just leave a few of these lying around... :hurr:

I have decided I'm gonna save 200 squids and spray them at home. It wont last 'as' long but it'll be a much more reasonable cost in one mouthful.

Not best pleased but skint is as skint does. We move in 7 weeks though and I'v ALOT to do beforehand so it might just come down to time and a quick powdercoat.
