Commonality of parts

Post by simonc » Wed Feb 15, 2017 12:22 am

Hi all,
(I apologise if this is in the wrong section), there's a question I have that I hope someone can answer, please.

Is there a definitive list of parts that can be used on my (and other Preludes) that are common to either: A, Other Hondas or B, Other Manufacturers?
Obviously I'm not talking about bits of bodywork and things that make the car unique, what I'm thinking is that things like power steering pumps, electrical parts, air-con pumps, brake pumps, fluid reservoirs and such. In other words, the stuff that Honda doesn't make, that's made by (for example) Denso and those folks, are they interchangeable from other Hondas or indeed, from say a Subaru, a Toyota or a Nissan?
I find it hard to imagine that say, a power steering pump is unique to the Prelude, but of course I'm probably wrong.
I just wonder if anyone's ever compiled the list of non-Honda parts that can be whipped from summat else that does the job for what is was intended?
Thoughts anyone? Ta, Si.

There is loads of parts compatible with other Hondas. Like suspension between 4th and 5th gen or engine/gearbox from accord typeR. Also you can use some switches or such a small things from CRV. You can adopt some stuff from other brands like for eg electric power steering pump from mr2. But obviously this will require some modifications. Loads of ideas ...

But I've never seen any kind of list of parts used between models/brands

well, there are some sites that can provide you list of cars utilizing the part you're looking for, but then you'd have to look for particular part.
im 99% confident that there is no such definitive list of applicable parts fro Preludes.

accord and rover 600 share the same platform - im not sure if the 5th gen lude has a rover indicator stem / gear lever or the other way around!

Not seen a list either. I have found some sites on the internet that alloy you to reverse look up what a part number is compatible with.

There are some parts interchangeable with other Honda's and Rovers of the same period, but not a huge amount (sensors, switchgear, engines etc.)

Things like radiators etc are normally bespoke to each vehicle, despite being made by a third party (rad shape/fixing positions is primarily driven by the design of the front chassis than anything from the rad supplier!)

Thanks lads, it seems as though it's easier just to stick to getting the bespoke parts rather than faff about. Appreciate the feedback.
