Vibes when accellerating
Blimey, why is it so difficult to get your wheels balanced properly?
Or is it just me?
I had a bit of a vibration from the rears, so I went into a local branch of a chain and asked them to balance all four corners, which they did.
The next day I had to drive 100 miles up the motorway to catch a plane. Well, around 100-130mph the shaking was so bad the car was almost undriveable. Far worse than it had been before they balanced it!
As I had time to spare before my flight, I went to a place near. The airport and asked them to do it, which they did, pronouncing that whoever had done it before had got all the weights in the wrong places.
They did it again, I left and all seemed ok for a mile or so then I'm sure I heard a tinkling sound, and the vibration came back. I reckon the stick-on weights they use fall off.
Surely it's not rocket science to get wheels balanced correctly?

If you think it's hard getting your wheels balanced... You should try my c5! (centreless wheels and everywhere has 'lost' their centreless boss when I ask)
Formula One tried to convince me (after fitting the tyres
that you didn't really need to balance the wheels...

Agreed, more likely to be CVs, worn track rod ends or a deformed tyre - severe shaking is highly unlikely to be the wheel balancing IMHO. The consequence of the problem might be that the weights are being shook loose?!Merlin wrote:If the wheels are 100% balanced properly it could be a problem with inner CV joints. I have had this problem a few times.

Not if it's the inner joints, nope.
I've had violent shaking through the driveline at speed, with no clonking, due to drokked inner joints*. Easy enough to tell by grabbing hold of the shaft from underneath though and trying to move it up/down.
*not on a lude, on something else, but principle holds true....

Super Secret 1G (not really super secret!)
Well notwithstanding the advice about wobble being caused by dodgy inner CVs, I once again got my wheels balanced, in a city 100 miles away from home.
While driving away I heard the clatter of the weights falling off again. (The stick-on ones). I was in a rush so couldn't go back, but had to drive home with the car vibrating badly.
The next day I had time, I took the wheels off the car, and removed all the remaining weights. Some of them didn't take much to remove - hanging on by a corner.
Then brought the wheels to yet another place to have them balanced. When done, I brought the wheels home and before refitting them to the car I drew around them with a marker for future reference, then blobbed some silicone over them all - to ensure they were glued in place.
Once set, I drove the car - no tinkling noises of weights falling off, and a nice smooth ride!
Which kinda proves my theory that those stick-on weights do, indeed, fall off.
