3rd gen, hoses

Post by Sooty » Thu Nov 09, 2023 6:40 am

Morning all, still on the hunt for the elusive 3rd and have come across one where the seller states that the coolant and Aircon hoses have perished.

Having serched the coolant hoses are available here https://www.prohoses.co.uk/product/prel ... -hose-kit/

But I can't find any Aircon hoses. Whilst it will be opened up are there any other hoses that should be replaced, and do you have any sources?

Given the above the car isn't drivable so I'm not sure what else could be wrong but on the other hand I may only have a few more years of driving left in me now !

As ever thanks for reading!

My first suggestion would be to look on https://www.rockauto.com/
3rd gens were very popular in the US and there is still some aftermarket support there.
If they have it, it's shipping from US but nothing to worry about there - it's express shipping, really quick. You will pay import duties on top.

If not... It would be a case of trying to get them made up to replace (there will be someone that can do it). So long as you have the originals with the original metal ends, that should be do-able.

A lot of the air con hoses and heater hoses from the US may not work, as they are left hand drive, the pipes run different routes in the engine bay.

Having some air con hoses made up is fairly straight forward. You can even make your own.......

You could phone a mobile AC mechanic and see what they can offer. The guy who did my 5G was awesome and could make new pipes if needed.

That's a good point to be sure to double-check, yes.

That's awesome guys, appreciate the info and it's reassuring that's it do able!
Now to travel at the crack of dawn to see it in the flesh, if all good, and I'm the sort that bus with my heart and not my head, have it recovered.

Actually, I've just realised those coolant pipes are for a manual and this is an auto.
Any suggestions chaps? Thanks

I don't think there's any difference between an auto and manual on the cooling pipes.
The auto runs the automatic transmission fluid through the bottom of the rad, but that doesn't change the cooling system (and you can use auto rads in manual cars).

If you're concerned, look up the oem part numbers for the manual and the auto in an on-line oem parts catalogue, to see if they're any different.

Whereabouts is the car you're going to look at? There might be a current 3g owner nearby that could help look at it with you (if you wanted) and offer advice etc.

Thanks @wurlycorner , I'll take a look when I'm back near a computer and I'll put the part numbers in. If I did it correctly the last time the part numbers were different but I'll check again.

The car is in Doncaster and advertised on Facebook, looks like I dithered too long as he has someone coming to view tomorrow but lesson learned for next time. If it was a green one I wouldn't have thought twice! I couldn't afford the last green one that came up!
Thanks again
