Miracle Cure

Post by Angus » Mon Jun 24, 2013 2:20 pm

For my final oil leak, I recently discovered that I was getting a dribble from the unserviceable seal on the shaft between my rear balancer pulley and oil pump gear ("case set, gear", Mr Honda calls it).

So I got it changed, and lo and behold lots of other stuff suddenly came right ...

1. Air conditioner started working
2. Stereo no longer overloads/clips/switches self off, even with sub thundering away
3. Car no longer vibrates at 60 mph (I bloody knew my wheels were balanced and all the susp was ok!)
4. I no longer get a stumble between 1st and 2nd gear when pushing hard
5. EL dials now nice and bright

Whether this was because the old shoogly pulley was placing a strain on other things and not allowing the crank pulley to spin effectively I don't know. Nor do I care.

Also, I might now declare that I have had absolutely no oil leaks for 4 whole days now (seals changed recently - front crank, front balancer, camshafts, VTEC, rocker cover, cam end seal and sump gasket) and no coolant loss either. I aim to keep my fluids to myself from now on. :)

The car was probably in a huff until you fixed it, just like a wife :P

It's certainly a mystery, though I suspect the oil leak meant the balancer pulley was a bit loose, which might have caused vibrations, so that the crank pulley might not have been sending a clean belt-drive thingy to the alternator which in turn wasn't squirting enough juice at the battery.

Or something.

Fixing a huff in the missus is something I gave up on years ago. I just resign myself to it nowadays. Sometimes I actually say "is it that time of the month again already?", and run away very swiftly indeed.

Result!

Well done, must be a great feeling to be able to stop your fluids emerging in an unsightly way in public :D
