I thought it was only type s/s-spec cams that were the bigger cams on the 5g... :? I know the a8's have the higher compression pistons

The a8 has the more aggressive cams too. All the red top H22's (Type-S / S-SPEC / H22a7 / H22a8) all have 11:1 comp, the more aggressive cams and 62mm throttle body.

I think it is the different combinations of ECU's, fuel and intake manifolds. The a8 is basically a toned down version of the a7 with the only real difference being that the casting of the head itself is different due to the a7's intake manifold and EGR system.

Because if a Type R had less power than a Type S, it would completely confuse the public... :P

 reeeeally. so if you took an a8, changed the inlet mani for an atr one (that had been modded to fit), add a better exhaust mani, type s intake and a p28 & Hondata then have it remapped, your looking at 20-40bhp gain 8-) ( :?: )

That is what Bennyboy did in his 4th gen. He got PAW to rebuild an a8 for him, fitted an ATR IM, ported the head and it now (or did before his engine hiccup) punts out 244bhp and 173lbft. A stock a8 is 197bhp with 153lb/ft or there about.

Edit - speak of the devil!
