Boo!!!!!! My ABS light came on this morning. I pulled the code and its 81 - Central Processing Unit. The service manual flow diagram says to clear the code and if the light comes back on, replace the ABS CPU. After clearing the code the light is still on :(

Luckily the UK 5th gen 97-98 and 99+ use the same ECU (39790-S30-E01), and they are cheap 2nd hand at £20-£30. So have a new one arriving from eBay.

Edit - It's the next day and the light has gone back off  Typical. Anyway, i'll have the new 2nd hand ABS ECU sitting there jsut in case.

The threat of replacing it was enough to fix!

I too have intermittent ABS light coming on (3 different fault codes including code 81) but since replacing my alternator it’s not coming on half as much, I think they are very reliant on good voltage I believe mine just has some dry solder joints somewhere but the control units are so cheap it’s easier to replace it it seems…

Any used replacement is worth re-flowing the solder before fitting though - they're all roughly the same age so will go the same way etc.

My ABS light has stayed off ever since that day.

A few little things.... I previously had 2nd and 3rd gear RPM grinds, these have now gone. It was due in part to the fact that the clutch pedal helper spring had fallen off. No idea how it happened, but the car came like that. It was a right pain in the ass to refit the spring as it needs to be compressed to get it back into position. A few cable ties and depressing the pedal got it back in place. The pedal feels much nicer now.

I also got around to replacing the front number plate as I didn't like the black bolts holding it on. A pic with Vanzep's 5G:

You can see from the pic that I still haven't fitted by leather front seats. I need to get the driver seat fixed as one of the seat panels has burst.
