Hi Donald, you old sage, the fill point connections are different between r12 and r134, they change everytime a new type of gas is produced and installed to distinguish between gas types. tried Halfords and Honda Main dealer sometime ago, but no go with either. For now I do it the old fashioned way, open the windows and sunroof!!

Yeah, I drive down there almost every day. Did he say it was an awesome looking car, being driven by a handsome young man in his early 30's?

Nah, he said you're an ugly old bar steward, driving a heap of jobby!!! It was him who did my arches for me , 'mates rates' otherwise she'd have been uneconomic and may well have scrapped her, he's a bit of a petrol head, himself, and we've both enjoyed biking together for the last 30 odd years. He was fascinated when I told him of your intentions to do engine and gearbox swap in the spring

Yeah, it was definitely me then!
Hmm, I might be calling on his services mid next year then to sort out my deteriorating arches. Then he can check out the conversion too.

Sounds a go-er, he's a plumbing and heating engineer by trade, so generally very busy, he learnt his car welding skills by doing ground-ups on things like MGB's, Stags, Minis etc. going back a bit, he's a bloody good all-rounder, so useful to know.
Matter of interest, and not being nosey, what trade you in? His son has just bought a really nice 2.2 cdti accord, so he's now a Honda convert, he bought it from Stag gates and was defo in the right place at the right time, got it for 1600 quid, absolute bargain, its what I'd have got if my 3g was uneconomic to repair, its worth at least 3 grand.

Oh, back to the arches, yours will probably be the same issues as mine, so he's had practice, plus I still have 3/4 of a tin of NH538 paint and thinners which you're welcome to use for repairs, its a good match and it'll save you 100 quid. Also when you do your conversion, I may blag a few redundant parts from you, as i'll be stocking up whilst they are available. How'd you get on with Hondaboy in Scotland? I found him very helpful and fair on prices.

Yes but it can be done by some of these mobile types IIRC.prelude91 wrote:Hi Donald, you old sage, the fill point connections are different between r12 and r134, they change everytime a new type of gas is produced and installed to distinguish between gas types. tried Halfords and Honda Main dealer sometime ago, but no go with either. I'm hazy on the specifics but I'm sure I read it's a case of they run something through the system as a neutraliser/liner, then the fill point/following gadgetry can be swapped with a fire and forget fixture and then you can just fill with the 134 type as and when.

Thanks Donald, i'll bear that in mind, i'll approach the issue once I'm back in May, along with the abs light, Honda still have the set up to 'plug and play' with that issue. I did try another aircon 'specialist' this summer, which happened to be next door to my m/cycle tyre retailer, but they just looked at me blankly... at least I've still got windows and a sunroof!!!

You have to, because r12 isn't available, but the connectors on r12 cars are a different size and you need to add some lube to an old r12 car, that's why most modern a/c places can't do an old r12 car, they just aren't set up for it.Donald wrote:You can always convert to R134a (I think that's right).
Car looks great btw.

Thanks wurly, potentially, then, I need to find someone to convert the connectors, initially, then refill with r134. Any contacts.
