Re: JC's 94 JDM SI-Vtec
Lude's back from mot. List of failures;
Brake failures; RBT service brake efficiency 49%, RBT park brake efficiency 13%
Windscreen washer jets not working
N/S headlight not working
N/S/R sill/wheel arch needs welding
O/S/R sill/wheel arch needs welding
N/S/F wheel bearing excessive play
Hazard warning lights not flashing in phase with ignition on or off
Advisories;
Various panels corroding
Front number plate deteriorating
Accident damage to n/s/r
Exhaust corroding
All discs corroding
Various suspension bushes deteriorating
Rear tyre treads lifting on inner edge
Outer CV boots cracking badly
Front tyres bold on inside edge and cracking
The garage said he'd charge me £300 for welding and wheel bearing and I'm going to (attempt to!) do the rest myself, wish me luck.

Rear brakes are a very common thing on ludes. Even when they're spot on, they give very low readings so it doesn't take much for them to fail.
You'll probably get away with swinging the caliper out, taking the pads out, removing the shims and then giving everything a good rub down/clean up with a wire brush, small file and brake cleaner, then re-assemble with silicone grease or copper grease everywhere.
Check the slider pins aren't seized and the end of the handbrake cables where they attach to the caliper levers.
If they're all ok, then cleaning everything up will probably be enough.
If the handbrake cable pivots are seized, they can be a right PITA to unsieze, because you can't just whack the pins out.
If the slider pins are seized, you can order new ones from brakes international easily/cheaply enough.
All the info you need on stripping it down/building it up is in the service manual.

In the wiki-lude section (menu bar at the top of the forum).
http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/wiki/in ... ce_Manuals
There's the main manual for the 4th gen and then there are supplements for minor changes made in each later model year. All pdf's

Re: JC's 94 JDM SI-Vtec

I've been onto Brakes International to get an idea of price for discs, pads and service kits for rebuilding the brakes and the BB4 isn't listed. Are they the same as the 2.2i vtec BB1 brakes? If so, is this the case with other parts as well (suspension bushes, wheel bearings etc)?

Re: JC's 94 JDM SI-Vtec
Had a chance to start on the Lude today, had to empty the boot to find locking wheel nut and found all this under the carpet;

Bonus!
Onto the real work then......my first ever attempt at stripping a brake calliper assembly
Thanks to wurlycorner and mercutio for the advice (and pointing me towards the service manuals in wiki-lude), and yes the end of the handbrake cable was a proper fooker (half a can of wd40, an assortment of tools not made for the job and plenty of swearing later the pin finally came out!).

Success!!

On the calliper bracket, pin b has a cracked seal and is seized - any advice on getting it out (calliper bracket is not on the car now as I want to paint it with the calliper)

I found the offending rust whilst under the arch, offside is much the same, is £100 a side fair money to pay to repair this?
Started on the o/s brake but was getting dark quickly and, as this is my first go at doing anything like this on my own I am ill prepared and have no lead lights! I think one will be liberated from work tomorrow so I can get the o/s/r off one evening this week.
It shocked me how much I enjoyed being under a car, freezing cold and wet!.....can't wait to get back out there and get some more done.
