The only reason the upper balljoints entered my head was that this exact situation happened to me when we were doing the suspension on the race car 5 years ago 8-) except we noticed before they went on the car. I ended up getting new whole arms with the new ballpoints in them.

was it making a noise or anything?

difficult to tell if they were making any noise as ive had noise from driveshaft and today ive found that the front drop links need further tightened to the roll bar ends as that is causing a clunk - ive only had to replace one side Lewie the passenger side one hasnt moved and isnt causing any issue. Easy to check just jack the car up and look to see if the ball joint has lifted out a bit - if it has then it can be tack welded in situ just pull the boot down before welding and put some new grease in there before putting the boot back in place. :)

Sorry to hear of more niggles, but good work tracking down the cause.

As I've found on Lisa's lude on the poly bush inserts then - with the rear one in as well, it's too harsh for a daily.

yep its been a total pain but now its done and sorted i can see its been worthwhile :)

swapping out the rear poly mount has cut most of the vibration but it still a mystery why the poly mounts cause vibration in the BB1 and yet ive done all 4 mounts in the BB4 and its got no issue like that at all :?

got to think about having a look at valve clearances, distributor and timing/balance belt

They wont cause vibration they will just amplify it

wow thats abit crazy about the ball joints, i take it they were just an interference pressed fit like original but just not the same tolerences... good job you found that, wounder if there is a sir clip retained ball joint you can get for them

yep thats why im going to be looking at disti timing, balance belt and valve clearances to see what the underlying issue is :)

The aftermarket ball joints do have a circlip retainer but they arent snug enough to stop some up and down movement ;) Although its only a few mm of movement its not ideal.

Are you sure it doesn't just idle at a slightly different revs (lower perhaps?) to your other one?
I notice that with mine, when the ac is on the drop revs just a little, and it's just enough to get some vibrations through the cabin which I don't normally.

it could be just that - the car runs well and is very smooth with the power delivery - i just know that the idle on my BB4 is perfect but that has taken years and much work - i want the BB1 to be the same :)
i did find the other day that a couple of the dash fixings on the drivers side were broken so ive secured them but now the door card rattles :x im sure this is going to take a while to sort out completely
I am going to be inspecting the timing belt soon so will be an opportune time to do valve clearances and check disti timing
