Plus anything newer than the 2f gen is f-ugly!!!

They're probably one of the better cars vw ever made tbh. VW can't make big engines, compared to any other marque equivalent they're always underpowered and overweight, the GT and G40 Polos however were amazeballs and still used today for competitions.

yeah vw's have gotten more and more bloated and overweight the original golf gti was a decent car

My Mk2 Golf with a 1.6 and a GTi cam swapped in moves quite nicely, but it does weigh under a tonne

I think a lot of modern cars are underpowered tbh - people want luxury, safety and cheap tax for daily drivers in the main so something has to suffer. Most cars are obese now, but the motors big enough to move them are not pocket friendly!

I hate modern VWs with a passion. My missus has had a long run of Golfs, Passats and Seat Ibizas and they were all crap as far as I'm concerned ... fat, over complicated and dull. I did though very much like my old Polo and my Mk3 Golf estate. And only today I got offered a Jetta. I'm quite excited about that.
