Possibly looking for a Prelude....

Post by paulgtt » Tue Oct 07, 2014 2:24 pm

Hi folks,

My names Paul and from Grantham in Lincolnshire.

I don't have a Prelude (at the moment anyway!) but myself, father inlaw and both brother inlaws are looking at buying something to use as a track car,we haven't fully yet decided on what to go for (probably won't be till next year) but a Prelude 2.2 VTEC looks appealing and seems to tick most of the boxes.

Iv done a fair amount of tracking before and have always been impressed by the Prelude's I have come across. We normally use our road cars for track but its getting a bit expensive with fuel, servicing and parts plus id be gutted if I stacked my car in a moment of madness

What sort of upgrades are first port of call on these?
We are aiming to lose as much weight as possible but still keeping it road legal, what kind of weight can the 4th and 5th gen's be gotten down to?
Does anyone else on here track their Prelude?

Any advice or input appreciated, thanks

several people track their ludes here bud, myself included :) if you want the lightest lude, find a 4th gen BB4 which will have no 4WS, and try and find one without a sunroof as it will probably not have TCS or ABS either as they all weight a lot.

after that, start stripping the interior, including the air con, cruise control (if it has it), power steering, add a set of light wheels and your heading in the 1050kg mark ;)

Welcome to LG!!!

Yes there are quite a few of us that track our Preludes. Have a read through the following profiles:

si import's BB4 4th gen - http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/profile ... t4910.html
W1GGZ BB4 4th gen - http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/profile ... t8181.html
Mart's BB1 4th gen - http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/profile ... -t174.html
Thebusofwoe's BB1 4th gen - http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/profile ... t7849.html
Drax's BB1 4th gen - http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/profile ... t1400.html
My BB4 4th gen - http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/profile ... -t540.html

My BB8 5th gen which has seen a fair bit of track action - http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/honda-p ... -t263.html

I agree with Drax, a Japanese import BB4 is a good base to start as they commonly come from the factory without 4WS, ABS, sunroof etc.. If you get a preface lift (guys what is the cut off for pre face lift cars? 94?) they don't come with air bags or dash support bars. I managed to get around 100kg out of my BB4 without going too mental. So getting the car down to the 1050kg Drax mentioned is reasonable.

All JDM 4th gens have the 197bhp H22a which gives around 170bhp at the wheels.

You'll find most people that track Preludes have a 4th gen. This is because the UK got loads of import 4th gens, 4th gens have been historically cheaper than 5th gens, and aftermarket performance parts are generally easier to get hold of (especially 2nd hand).

For track fun coilovers, brake fluid, brake hoses and brake pads are the first things that should be upgraded IMO.

Thanks for the welcome and input guys.

Im assuming if its a BB4 etc it'll be in the chassis number somewhere?
Whats the average sort of price for a BB4? We aren't looking to spend loads of money!
Thinking about it, is there a list or guide somehwhere which shows which models come with what and what chassis/model numbers they are?

there probably is a guide but im not sure where it is lol! your 4g vin plate is under the bonnet, bottom right by the headlight :)
a BB4 will range from £200-2000, depending on its condition and whether its had any mods done to it. a reasonable unmolested import 4g with not much rust usually goes for around £900

You could get a track worthy base for easily sub 1k I would've thought. Lots of rusty Preludes about.

I paid £500 for mine and has done many track days now with no mechanical issues and it really does suprise the more expensive track cars when I'm sat behind them
