Just re-reading this. Firstly, I'll reiterate that genuinely, I do think these are cool.
Secondly, I'm confused... Why use a 1.4 head and ecu on a 1.6 engine? Why not just stick with the full 1.6 setup?

I'm not au fait with Polos, but I'm guessing it's either to do with running a cross flow head or a specific kind of fuel injection? I could be way off the mark though :lol:

Isn't it all the same jobby whether it's a favia/polo/golf/favorit/leon/Ibiza/whatever else happened to be in the VAG stable at the time? Thought the drivetrains were basically all the same and any difference in power output (for the same capacity) was the ecu?

There's definitely different crank shafts, cam shafts and bores. There's different sized bottom ends, some cylinder heads are cross flow some aren't, all kinds of weird stuff like that. Then in the early 90's there were loads of different fuel injection systems over a short period of time, although digifant seemed to be most prevalent although even then there's different revisions.

There could well be something in it in terms of ECU, but I think there's a lot of subtle differences in the make up of the blocks also. If you get creative you can combine most engine parts together though, VW seem to have kept the same engine architecture from the 1970's for their inline 4 engines :lol:

It's a much simpler reason than you'd think. The 1.6 cambelt runs differently to the 1.4 belt, and fitting the engine mount is a much much simpler job with the 1.4 head on.

top: polo gti 1.6 16v (avy) timing belt setup
bottom polo 1.4 16v (afh) timing belt setup

See? The engine mount would go below where the pencil is, and on the 1.6 engine, the belt gets in the way. It is possible, but not easy. Plus the 1.4 injectors hook up to the existing wiring loom, the 1.4 intake manifold has a cable operated throttle, not electronic like the 1.6. Using the 1.4 intake manifold works better with the 1.4 head due to flow rates and design of valves.


The engine it has in there at the moment is an 8 valve engine, so converting to 16 valve will give about a 50-60hp gain :)

Ah ok, your chassis uses different mounting points to mine. The Golf doesn't have a mount on the face with the timing belt, it only has a front mount, rear mount and gearbox mount :)

Yea, there's nothing that's really Golf on this. Despite the size and look, it's closest to Polo.
