EvilDmen's RX8 231 Project.

Got a car that isn't a Lude? There's no condemnation here. Tell us about it!

Most interesting. And never actually seen the rotors before, either.

Keep up the good thread :)

I had this debate with someone at japfest. Nothing to do with being a purist, but it seems utterly pointless to me to by an rx-7 or 8 and swap the rotary out for a standard engine. Really just dont get it... Most special/unique part of the car and then you remove it.
:huh? That would be like buying a type-s and removing atts.
No-one in their right mind would do that.

No...

Wait...

:?

So after a lot of scrubbing, washing, stripping and razor blading it was ready to go back together.

DISCLAIMER THIS POST CONTAINS COPIOUS USE OF VASELINE!!

Rotors stripped and ready to be cleaned and reassembled.

Image

The side seals and springs, corner seals and springs, apex seal springs (Long and short) and both sets of oil seals, O rings and springs were all within spec to be reused. I was however glad I made the decision to replace the apex seals!

Image

New Stationary gear bearings pressed in.

Image

Image

New water seals all lubed up with vaseline! ;)

Image

Front stationary gear in place in the front end plate and the front rotor housing fitted up. All lubricated with 2 stroke oil ready for start up.

Image

Front Rotor in, springs and seals all held in place with lube!

Image

Apex seals, both sets of springs in and Eccentric shaft seated. Hylomar used on all sealing surfaces

Image

Centre plate and rear Rotor housing fitted. More 2 stroke added.

Image

Rear Rotor, end plate and stationary gear fitted. All dowel bolts and seals fitted and torqued up.

Image

We fitted the oil pump assembly and flywheel (Luckily no drama), checked end float and it was dead on where it should be.
Then the nail biting moment of manually checking for compression.

With the hard bit done, we proceeded to refit the injectors, the oil metering pump and lines, rotor housing oil dribblers, sump pan, engine oil pump, water pump and loom.

Feeling good about the days progress we made the fatal mistake of trying to fit the engine whilst A: tired and B: when the sun was going down. As you can imagine this didn't go well and after about an hour we backed it out and put it back on the bench.

The next morning we tried again and it slotted straight in and mated to the gearbox without any issues!

All the Ancillaries went back on. (I was so glad I took the time to label everything!)

Filled with liquids.
And then... The moment of truth!

Purring like a kitten!

Now all I have to do is wait for payday. New spark plugs and leads ordered. Then some new non-ditch finder tyres and it's MOT time!

Wish me luck!

After the 1000 miles run in I'll most probably be selling this one as I fell in love with the Winning Blue and I really enjoyed bringing this one back to life! ;)
