The 4th gen sump fit the 5th gen block fine but trying to put the 5th gen sump on the 4th gen block did not fit.
The 4th gen has a complete windage tray that follows the contours of the bearing cap bridge (both engines have identical bearing cap bridges) and the sump fits nicely underneath it.
On the 5th gen the sump is either slightly thicker or minutely shallower on the non-pickup side. Either way the sump fouls on the middle knuckle of the bearing cap bridge/windage tray, to get around this Honda have cut the offending part of the windage tray out, allowing the sump to fit better.
So when you try and use a 5th gen sump and 4th gen windage tray they just hit off each other.
This not a huge issue as I assume most people will be fitting a 4th gen sump to a 5th gen so they wont encounter this problem. The issue I had was that I needed to have a sump on my 4th gen race engine for storage/transportation and the only sump I had was a 5th gen one, and the bugger wouldn't fit
