I wish I had the knowledge/confidence to fiddle
around with engines like you - winter plans for my
track car are: replace rear led on registration
plate

It's 3rd Gen Steve's fault, he taught me. We don't do any internal work just bolting bits together

Sump swap - 5th gen Vs 4th gen sumps

Post by Merlin » Mon Feb 08, 2016 12:43 pm

More work on both the engines 8-)

I had to ask Rich why my 5th gen sump would not fit my 4th gen engine even though the 4th gen sump fits the 5th gen. It is because the windage trays (baffle plate in the service manual) are different, the 5th gen has a section removed:

5th gen Vs 4th gen windage trays:

The 5th gen and 4th gen oil pickups are the same:

5th gen gasketless sump Vs 4th gen gasketed sump (baffled):

With all the bits I need off the 4G engine and all non-essential parts removed the engine was packaged for storage and its eventual transport to PAW later in the year. We used a half pallet and built a base for the engine to slip on to.

A sneak peek of the wheels (going to be refurbed) I got off Newkid and what the 2016 engine will look like:

:? If the the 5g has an extra hole in the baffle plate, I can't understand how that stops it fitting? surely lack of a hole would be a problem, rather than extra hole? :? I must be missing something

Great job making up the bespoke pallet there 8-)

The 4th gen sump fit the 5th gen block fine but trying to put the 5th gen sump on the 4th gen block did not fit.

The 4th gen has a complete windage tray that follows the contours of the bearing cap bridge (both engines have identical bearing cap bridges) and the sump fits nicely underneath it.

On the 5th gen the sump is either slightly thicker or minutely shallower on the non-pickup side. Either way the sump fouls on the middle knuckle of the bearing cap bridge/windage tray, to get around this Honda have cut the offending part of the windage tray out, allowing the sump to fit better.

So when you try and use a 5th gen sump and 4th gen windage tray they just hit off each other.

This not a huge issue as I assume most people will be fitting a 4th gen sump to a 5th gen so they wont encounter this problem. The issue I had was that I needed to have a sump on my 4th gen race engine for storage/transportation and the only sump I had was a 5th gen one, and the bugger wouldn't fit

I'll pull together all the bits from across the forum and do a post for the wiki.

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to. A Dremmel should be capable.
