What was it like getting it off? No trouble with any of the bolts?
Got me thinking I should get mine checked out... :?

No trouble in getting any of the bolts off, even the one that goes through the mount. I had to move the rad though as it was near impossible to get to the mount otherwise. By taking the top hose off there was enough room to get the rad out the way with the bottom hose still attached.

Don't know if the 5g differs greatly from the a 4g, but I've always changed these with the rad in situ but bracket from the front of the engine removed.
It is a PITA.

This pic shows how little room there was to get in about the bolts. You can imagine where the rad sits. I suppose you could do it with everything in place but for the 2 mins it takes to move the rad I wasn't going to fight with it.

Yeah, sorry I wasn't meaning to question why you'd taken the rad out - much easier without definitely - I meant it as a note for prahunt, in case he doesn't fancy taking the rad out of his, it is possible with the rad still in.
All the air-con shenanigans around/over the back of the rad on mine, meant taking the rads out is much more than a 2 min job  It's a case of lesser of 2 evils!

Oil Cooler O-ring

Post by Merlin » Mon Mar 16, 2015 9:41 am

More fixing of the car but still exiting for me as it has got rid of my oil leak and the horrible smell of hot burnt oil 8-)

I got a bit of time to swap out the oil cooler O-ring. A bit of a pain in the arse to do as the new O-ring doesn't want to sit in its groove unassisted. In the end I just smooshed the cooler back on to the block and prayed that the O-ring was seated properly, it is no longer leaking so I assume all is good.

Old Vs new

The old one was so hard, brittle and compressed

It had a big crack in it

Plus she got and oil change and a new filter while I was at it.

At first I was like "HTF am I going to do this" as the O-ring kept popping out, by holding it in place with one finger as I slid the cooler back into place you could feel that it was seated properly.

I greased my seal to hold it in place before fitting. ;)

With a thick grease? Something like lithium grease to gloop it up so it sticks? I had a fair bit of oil still on the cooler so it was fairly slippy.
