H23A DOHC

Post by Donald » Wed May 01, 2013 1:45 pm

Can someone educate me on these engines? Doesn't seem to be too much info out there.

All I know is they're rare and only came in the Accord wagons.

If they were more widely available would you pick the VTEC H23 over the H22?
What exactly are the Frankenstein engines? H22 head and the rest is H23?
Is it just as awkward to build a Frankenstein as it is find a real one?

So many questions.

The only person I know that has built and run (pushed hard!) a 'frankenstein' one is Rich at PAW.

IIRC, the blue top ones are about the same bhp as the H22's, just a bit more torque? :?:

They have a lower rev limit also?

Yeah roughly the same, touch more torque but seems to achieve this at slightly lower revs.

Obviously this is all dependant on how it's set up and the figures I've seen are pulled from Wiki which isn't always 100% accurate, but that seems to have the most comprehensive list.

An example comparing the stock figures from Wiki:

H22A8: 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp) @ 7,100 rpm & 156 ft·lbf (212 N·m) @ 5,250 rpm
H23A: 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp) @ 6,800 rpm & 163 lb·ft (221 N·m) @ 5,300 rpm

I'm probably making this painfully clear that I am a bit of a novice when it comes to this sort of discussion.

Perhaps @PerformanceAutoworks could shed some light on this, time and patience permitting.

Given that to my eyes these engines are relatively similar in terms of their stock output, what would make you choose one over the other?

I'm almost certain that Rich went into big detail about this, either here, PUK, or maybe even Honda Revs, might be wortha good search @Donald?

I will have another look, I will admit I didn't look on PUK

I have read somewhere that the redline is 7200, but again that's second hand info from a far away forum, hardly concrete info.

Rich ran his, basically to death on track many moons ago.
I can't remember if he said that he thought the failure was down to oil starvation or not, but I think he said he believed there were limitations to the crank. That's lots of thinks and IIRC though!

I suppose if you think of the limitations of an open deck vs a closed deck... then apply that same thinking to a longer stroke vs a shorter stroke... it makes some sort of sense?

I know they're not the same thing, but think as in the more potential for 'play', 'movement', however you want to put it, then that potential becomes realised and imposes an upper limit to what you can do?

I hope that translates to something you can understand, made sense in my head but I don't think I've worded it well.
