5TH gen strange noise from front of car

Post by Soda Farl » Wed Mar 26, 2014 3:50 pm

Hiya maybe someone can shed a little light on this I had a mechanic give it a very quick once over today but he wasn't sure what the problem is and is of doing a bit of research, he was pretty sure it was coming from the front of the car.

When I push the accelerater pedal there is a high pitched whinning noise it's difficult to explain what it sounds like. Almost like an electric golf trolley sort of noise. This also happens when the car is parked and in neutral and the clutch is not being used. The mechanic checked the belts etc and said he thought they were okay. It's much more noticeable at lower speeds. The noise may be there all the time and I don't hear it at higher speeds because of engine noise.

Any help appreciated.

Get a long screw driver and use it like a stethoscope to try and highlight where the noise is coming from. I would start on the power steering pump and alternator.

A plastic handled screwdriver is just as good IMO.

Be careful not to get it (or you) caught in any moving parts though...

When did it first start to occur? Have you had anywork done previous to this noise appearing?

Ie cambelt/ balance belt and tensioner renewal. As your balance belt may be too taut and need re tensioning as putting to much tension on a pulley and making the noise you are describing ;)

Just gave it a wee check there myself pretty sure it's coming from the alternator but I will get a second opinion to be sure.
