Difficult to get enough grip with chain wrenches.

I use the one you've linked to, it makes getting the filter off very easy. No idea if it will fit a vw golf though. I bought one that fits my other motor as well. I've used other types and they have always been more hassle than they are worth.

Ky Jelly.

Rub vigerously.

Once dried out it should come off and make a big mess.

I do a good bit of servicing and these have never let me down, even on some really hard to reach areas, even if you just get an 1/8th of a turn it will slacken quickly, best I've ever used and strong. Halfords.

I use one of those cup / socket thingies. In the past I've found a leather strap oil filter removal tool much better than the chain ones.

Same as DaveyBA8... i use a tool very much like that except its a mole grip mechanism... removed even the toughest of filters.

ive tried most of the above listed and this has been the best tool for the job for me

I believe this is the one I bought with a few other service items from Cox Motor Parts:

http://www.coxmotorparts.co.uk/genuine- ... -1918.html

Solid, well made and worked a treat, just a shame my Ducati oil-filter was too big for this to work as well!

I do like the sound of those oil-filter pliers but thankfully changed my Ducati oil-filter for a K&N item which has a hex head welded on the end for easy removal, like they should all have...
