About starter motor and high comp ratio engine...

Post by hondaddict » Sat May 06, 2017 11:01 am

Hi everybody! :D

I was thinking about Something i've noticed on my ATR that i found very Strange...

The original starter motor of the ATR is a 1.0kw motor and when you try to start the engine, with the 11/1 compression ratio, it takes a little more time than usually on all my Preludes...

I have replaced the starter motor with one coming from an H23 Prelude ( if i remember correctly) , this starter is a 1.4kw motor and you know what? The engine start quickly than with the 1.0 kw starter motor!

I also have a 1.6 kw starter motor but coming from an "auto" 2.2 VTI Prelude, it isn't "bolt-on" but after a quick look, it seems that the "motor" part of the starter can be mounted on my H23 Prelude starter...

As i'm going ( one day) to finish my H23 vtec build, which is going to have a higher compression ratio thant my actual H22A7, i'm pretty sure that modification is really interesting... does anybody tryied this modification before?

Thanks a lot for your answers! :D

Interesting.

I did notice that the H22a7 needed another spin or two to fire, compared with the H22a5. Now you've supplied the reason.
I've never weighed ours, but wonder if this is a trifling bit of Honda weight reduction.

Sailor, i think that it is more about a "cost" reduction, as the starter motor seems to be the same for all Accord gen6 petrol engine :D

Last day, the previous owner came home for a coffee and i start the ATR to show him how the engine runs normally know... ... and the first thing he noticed is about the quicker starter motor

I'm going to try the conversion as soon as possible, i have more "Strange" ideas than time to try them unfortunatly

Seems odd though. I've been using starter from f20a4 onto h22 swapped and no difference between them in terms of startup. Stock engines in both cases, so that may be the reason as well

rrobis , Prelude 4th gen and 5th gen starters are, as far as i know, 1.4kw starter ;)

Only on 6th gen Accord there's a 1.0kw starter, so it is normal that you didn't noticed any difference :D

RattyMClelland, you are right, it surely does a difference ;)

What i mean is that a "normal" starter for an H22 should have a power of 1.4 kw, as in any H22 Prelude.
But in the H22A7 Accord, the starter is weaker  , only 1.0 kw , and it explain why the engine seems so low to start.

Whatever , with a 1.0 or a 1.4 kw, the engine start, it is not a real problem, but i didn't love the "sound" it have, it is like the battery is always "weak", and as an ancient Prelude owner, i love to hear my engine start "immediatly"
