XTD clutch and flywheel - strange noise

Post by jdeale84 » Mon Mar 17, 2025 12:14 pm

Hi all so I wanted to give a little insight on my experience of the XTD light-weight flywheel and stage 2 clutch that I installed this year
This is the link https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115962227663

So far its been great, only covered about 300 miles but the engine revs nice and freely and the clutch feels good too, no issues there, so far an absolute bargain for £289.
The only issue has been a noise from the throw-out bearing.
This video perfectly shows the issue.

After it happened I thought the throw-out bearing they provided was faulty or bad quality. Long story short I ended up getting a ATR gearbox and a new oem honda throw-out bearing. Greased everything up carefully using high temp copper grease and the exact same issue appeared. So new throw-out bearing, different transmission, different clutch fork, slave cylinder was replaced a year and a half ago.

The only thing I can think is, the pressure plate isn't sitting 100% right, could this just be a quirk I have to live with now that I have an aftermarket clutch?
Only idea I have is to put a small foam pad in-between the slave cylinder and clutch fork to absorb the vibration to help with the noise.

XTD clutch and flywheel - strange noise

Can you see the release fork vibrating on yours, the same as it is in that video?
I think that's not the clutch release bearing causing that noise at all (when the clutch pedal is released, the bearing is pulled back from the clutch and is sat not spinning on anything - it only spins when it's in contact with the pressure plate).
I think that's just play/slack in the release fork that's chattering under the vibration of the gearbox/engine when they're at idle.
If you rev the engine while stood there, does the vibration/chatter go away?

there is a spring clip that fits to the back of the fork - could that be the issue

XTD clutch and flywheel - strange noise

I think that is your clutch release bearing. I had a similar issue once, I didn't notice vibration though. To me, it makes sense as the clutch fork attaches to the release bearing.

This is the noise my aftermarket release bearing was making (I am pressing and releasing the pedal to change the noise), and the noise was not there after I changed the clutch release bearing for a Honda OEM one.

says new oem bearing fitted and still same issue :?
must be the aftermarket clutch ? pressure plate not sitting flat...but also aftermarket flywheel fitted so could possibly be that

i have a used oem honda pressure plate (good condition if i remember right) if you want to try

If they're not properly balanced then yes they'd cause vibration, which would cause the release fork to vibrate.
Did the clutch cover plate locate tightly/well on the dowels on the flywheel or was it a bit of a loose fit?

I have slightly mis-remembered my situation when I had the same noise. Reading my post about it viewtopic.php?p=191529#p191529 the main issue that I had was that some pressure plate bolts had come loose.

Out of interest, @jdeale84 do you know what the pressure plate bolts were torqued to?
