Also check for leaks on the inlet system (vacuum hoses) and splits on the inlet plenum etc. Give them all a good visual inspection, move the pipes about and see if you see anything open up.

If that draws a blank, with the engine running, spray carb cleaner at bits of the inlet system and vacuum hoses in turn. If the engine note/speed changes, you have a leak at that point, but keep going on all the rest, to make sure you don't have more than one...

just relised I havnt got a new gasket. am I better getting a new one before I start taken it apart?

The gasket should come off intact.
I bought a new one just in case, and used it because I'd already bought it. :mrgreen:
