yep good thought on the coolant - i have noticed the last couple of times ive had to drain and refill the coolant that its hunted on start up but this has settled back to a rock solid 700rpm idle after taking it for a run - i changed the iacv and reset fitv. If i remember right it was the cleaning and resetting the fitv that made the most difference ;)

after an evening fettling in the garage and engine...
Image

and after multiple diversions away to do house stuff for the wife :troll: ...
Image

I found that the FITV when I took it out was rattling... and this valve was broken when I opened it up!
Image
looks like we have our cause... it was 11:50 by the time I put the spare I have back on and cleaned, so haven't managed to start up the car to test it yet but im 99% certain it was this.

one more thing - I was nosing around the check everything was ok and saw that the rear engine mount bolt was missing a nut :?
Image

so found one and fitted it on, then checked the others - the side mounts were ok but the front mount bolt was hanging out ...
Image

definitely not through to the other side any more
Image
so tonight's job will be to jack up the engine and level out the mount and bolt hole so the bolt will fit back in and I can add a nut

That rear nut that was missing should be securing a stabiliser bar that attaches to the side of the gearbox, but I cannot see it in your pics?

good new on finding the fault :)
dont worry too much about the rear gearbox brace ive been without one since my clutch was done back in 2003 and the garage didnt refit the front or back gearbox braces. I fitted the front one about 2 months ago - still got the rear one to do
and yeah ive noticed a few loose bolts on my lude last time i looked - they are all tightened up now
