So this has happened again. Refused to start for around a week, but today went to jump it and it started instantly. Ran it for 15 mins while doing a couple of other jobs, then went to rev it and same symptoms again. I've taken a video, when the engine revs freely I'm being gentle on the accelerator. If I put my foot right down, it does the coughing/spluttering thing.
Battery is now on reconditioning charge, and I'll get some fresh fuel to go in also.

Mine did shockingly similar when I installed a utter gash HRC updated fuel pump.
Turned out the fuel pump had a plastic tube that collapsed and won't release fuel quick enough.
A walbro pump solved that with a metal tube.
Of course this might not be your problem. But worth a mention incase your pump if failing.

Spluttering sounds like either mixture going way out, or overly retarded/weak spark.
The fact it's so instant and severe on/off I would suggest is ignition related rather than mixture, though? (mixture doesn't react/starve quite as quickly/violently as that???)
I would suggest starting by checking the strength of spark and the base timing (no, it shouldn't suddenly have gone out by just sitting there, but if the distributor is faulty, then this should show it up???).
Also check for any vacuum leaks.
Just to start with...

Interesting. However if this was the case wouldn't it do this from cold? The car will start and rev fine when cold, it's just after its warned up that this starts. It will continue to idle absolutely fine.RattyMcClelland wrote:Mine did shockingly similar when I installed a utter gash HRC updated fuel pump.
